Being a family caregiver can get tough! Not only are you managing your own day-to-day responsibilities, you’re also taking on many of the needs of your loved one. While this is incredibly rewarding, there’s no doubt it can get overwhelming. Embrace a few of these tips for a quick caregiver pick-me-up just for you each week. You deserve it!
Entertain your brain
There’s nothing quite like a good laugh to turn your frown into a smile. Many short and humorous videos available online are a perfect fit for a quick pick-me-up. From cute cat videos to funny home videos, you’re bound to feel a tickle in your tummy. Not only can they be fun for you, they are fun to share with your loved one as well!
Feel like disconnecting from your phone instead? Try finding an activity book that gets you away from the day-to-day craziness. Crosswords puzzles, Sudoku, or even coloring books are a fun brain stimulating activity.
Music
Soothe your nerves, relax and unwind, or lift your spirits with your favorite tunes. Start new playlists for the mood you’re trying to create. For example, if you’d like something to put a little boogie in your step, choose upbeat dance music. If you’d rather enjoy a less stimulating environment, soft instrumental music without distracting lyrics may be just the right fit.
Catch some Z’s
Ah, sleep! There’s nothing quite like a refreshing nap to rejuvenate and refresh your day. The ideal nap time for adults is 10 to 20 minutes and helps most people feel bright eyed and bushy tailed enough to take on the rest of their day.
Find it hard to slip away for that peaceful snooze? Arrange for respite care for your loved one. This can be with a personal care company who provides professional caregivers for a few hours, or with a trusted family member or close friend. Remember, it is ok to ask for help!
Exercise and physical activity
Is exercise not typically what you think of as a relaxing pick-me-up? Don’t knock it until you try it! Along with being a great confidence booster, exercise helps you cope with difficult situations in a healthy way. Not only does exercise release good endorphins, it also decreases depression and anxiety!
